Consider Travel Insurance: look for cancel for any reason (CFAR) policy, which enables you to cancel your trip in the event of a serious travel advisory, and recoup most of the cost.
Stay aware of your surroundings: this is a good rule of thumb whether the location you are travelling to has a travel advisory or not.
Secure your valuables: leave valuables in the safe in your resort room or store them in an anti-theft travel bag. Be sure to lock your cars and do not leave items in plain sight.
Be sure you have local emergency phone numbers for your destination.
Share your itinerary with someone you trust.
